When we’re in our twenties and thirties, it’s easy to feel invincible. A late night? You’ll recover. Living on convenience foods? You’ll probably feel okay. Skipping exercise? “I’ll start next week.”

Our bodies are incredibly resilient when we’re young. But resilience isn’t the same as immunity. As the years go on, I’ve also become much more aware of something I rarely thought about in my twenties: healthy ageing.

Not ageing fearfully and no chasing eternal youth. But giving my future self the best possible chance of living well.

Health Isn’t Built Overnight

Most of the conditions we associate with older age—type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, fatty liver disease and many cancers—don’t suddenly appear at 65. They often develop silently over decades. The encouraging news is that many of the same lifestyle habits that reduce disease risk also help us feel better today: more energy, better digestion, improved sleep, a healthier weight, improved mood and sharper concentration.

Healthspan Matters More Than Lifespan

Lifespan is how many years you live. Healthspan is how many of those years you remain active, independent and able to enjoy life.

When you’re 70…How do you want to feel?

Would you like to be:

? Walking confidently?

? Travelling?

? Gardening?

? Playing with grandchildren?

? Feeling mentally sharp?

? Living independently?

Or would you rather spend those years managing preventable health conditions that began decades earlier?

The choices we make today don’t just affect next week. They shape the next 30 or 40+ years.

Every Meal Is Information

One of my favourite ways to think about nutrition is: food isn’t simply calories. Food is information.

Every meal sends signals throughout your body. It influences blood sugar, inflammation, gut bacteria, hormones, immune function and even the health of your brain. No single meal will make or break your health, but the pattern you repeat thousands of times over the years becomes your biology.

Small Changes, Big Returns

Healthy ageing isn’t about restrictive diets or expensive supplements. It’s about consistently making choices that support your body:

• Eating more colourful plant foods

• Prioritising protein

• Looking after your gut

• Building and maintaining muscle

• Sleeping well

• Managing stress

• Moving every day

The earlier we begin, the greater the return on that investment.

Your Future Self Is Already Watching

One day you’ll look back on the decisions you make today. I hope they’re decisions that allow you to keep doing the things you love, with the people you love, for as long as possible. Because nutrition isn’t simply about adding years to life. It’s about adding life to your years.
